Debbie Sommer Artist Statement

My interest in painting started twenty five years ago, and  my mediums of choice were oils and acrylics.  After ten years of developing a style with those mediums, I decided to  try watercolor.  I was fascinated by trying to paint with the exact opposite approach to oils and acrylics.  Saving the "white" of the paper as the highlights proved to not only be  challenging but also very rewarding.  For the past fifteen years, I have enjoyed and pursued just such a challenge in my painting career.

I try to combine a love of color with a strong composition.  Staining and transparent watercolors are my paints of choice, which enable me to layer the paints in order to achieve a depth of color that only this type of process can ensure.  This time consuming technique produces a painting that is very bold, precise, and rich.

My subject matter includes florals, collages and compositions inspired  by musical instruments.  I use the same approach no matter what the subject matter and enjoy the variety  of all that I have been so fortunate enough to paint.   My hope is that the viewer will enjoy my finished work as much as I have enjoyed the journey painting it.
